Ryan, I gotta hand it to ya. If it weren't for this beautiful piece of art, I probably would never have heard of the SBY remake. Shortly after you uploaded this I ended up watching the entire series within a month and gladly consider it the best show I saw in '13. Brilliant story, great characters. Memorable art direction, too. Heck, it even had a very unusual ending where it felt... well, complete? I hardly expect that from the anime scene anymore, so it was a much welcomed surprise. It's shows like this that remind me that there's still hope for the industry yet.
Definitely! Compared to Korra's S2, too, I don't think there was ever a time in SBY2199 where I rolled my eyes. Fair enough, the show has the original SBY for its foundations, but all things considered the guys who made this new show really knew what they were doing. Here's hoping there's an affordable blu-ray set in the near future, though. (Seriously, one volume alone is worth over $100? WTH?!)
Anyway! So anything specific you liked in the series?
they literally did EVERYTHING right in the sby2199 remake.. which is so rare to see in this era when remakes are phoned in for quick cash.
my favorite parts were always the battles in space, especially when they used the Wave Motion Gun. my blood was rushing, goosebumps, everything. and with the soundtrack over all the pew pews and missiles there's really nothing more perfect.
also i liked the arc where that first Gamilas general was pursuing them very close to that star. that was a wave of emotions. i really enjoyed how they made you feel empathy towards all the 'villains', and also question the motives of the 'heroes' sometimes. many of the Gamilas generals are/were really great people. and they had respect for the captain of the Yamato. i dunno, you just don't see that very often anymore. most villains these days just like to be "evil" and don't have any motives or empathy. hell, even Dessler had humanity in him despite his pleasure in being a ruthless, bloodlusting dictator.
i could go on about it forever haha. what was your favorite stuff in it?
also, as for the box sets, japan has a habit of producing these super expensive blu-rays. they market them only for collectors. most normally range in the hundreds easily. i think we'll have to wait until a localization, when they rebrand it as "starblazers" ,
Hahaha, good point. Still, I really hope it doesn't come to that. I mean, there's just so much emotion with the Japanese cast that it'd be weird to hear an English take on it. Sure, there are some shows that miraculously do a better job like Cowboy Bebop and Martian Successor Nadesico, but those were freak occurrences in their own right.
You know what my fav music track was? Right when something went wrong. Heck, when was the last time I always wanted to stay and watch/listen to the credits, too? x_x
If I ever have a starship, too, may I have the Yamato's warning sirens. Every time I heard them my attention was glued to the screen. So many good notes were struck and you're right, I felt just as much for the so-called enemies as I did for the crew of the Yamato. (Even Goer-- well... maybe not. XD) Shultz was a legend, though. His fate was especially tragic, but I was even more sad for that Gamilian captain and his crew that aided the Yamato escape the ship graveyard. It made me think that maybe half the reason Dessler was so ruthless and uncaring was that he loathed the xenophobic nature of his fellow nobles. It was hinted plenty of times that he respected the other races that were subjugated into Gamilas' ranks. He seemed genuinely concerned about honourable deaths as well. And then we have Domel... badass of the cosmos that he was.
Argh, don't get me started on Domel. He was easily one of my fav characters. I really was hoping for him to have a happy ending with his wife.
wow that's a great melda. i kinda want it haha. i'm actually waiting on a yamato figure myself, except it's a scale model of yamato 2199 www.atomicempire.com/item.aspx… i can't wait for it to come! also, i don't think they're gonna dub yamato they are just going to be a NA release of the blu-rays but they localize the title as starblazers for some reason. they really should dub it but i doubt they will.
the whole soundtrack is brilliant, i got it for myself and i love listening to it. you never hear soundtracks with that 70's sci-fi vibe any more so it's really refreshing to hear.
shultz's was very tragic and i was quite sad when that happened. he felt trapped to me. and the crew of the yamato would never know his story. i was hoping at the last minute he would decide to change sides or surrender but that would have been too convenient.
domel was too loyal for his own good, but i admired his character. he was one of the more respectable generals that was close to dessler. it's no wonder he trusted so much in him.
i don't get on aim much these days but i'll make an effort. i'm usually on skype instead.
lol, even better. I have Skype as well. AIM is really only for talking awesome randomness and stuff with Chen anyway.
That looks like a pretty awesome model of the Yamato. The Soul of Chogokin series has always done justice for the stuff it showcases, (like this in my collection: www.hlj.com/product/BAN959034/… ), so it'd be worth the price tag. Gah, I need to make more money...
That said, there's actually a 1/1000 scale series of almost all of the 2199 ships, from Gamilas vessels to the ones they blow up: www.hlj.com/product/BAN978530/… Pretty sweet.
So you have all the music from 2199? I know there's a Part 1, 2 and 3 floating around, but I've only been able to find Part 1. Would gladly buy the lot if I knew where to hunt it down at a good price.
And yeah, it would have been awesome if Shultz had lived on and reunited with his family, but alas he among many Gamilians have a habit of providing 'those feels' instead.
