final piece for a painting class we had to pick a person who influenced history. i picked Ivan The Terrible, Grand Prince of Moscow from 1547 to 1584.

Ivan's rule was interesting in that its first half was prosperous, but the second was one of Russia's darkest times.

Russia saw a time of peace, enriched trade and culture when Ivan first took the throne. the famous St Basil Cathedral was built during this time, and many Russians were living a luxurious and happy life.

but the threat of war and a terrible illness that almost killed Ivan and warped his mind in the 1550's would flip everything upside down. during this time, he became increasingly paranoid and delusional, more in fear of his own life than his people as plague, famine and raiders literally burned most of Russia (and Moscow itself) to the ground. during this time Ivan accidentally killed his own son in a fit of rage, leaving his younger mentally ill son to take his place on the throne. he would prove to be a very unfit leader to clean up the mess his father left behind.

Ivan IV was a tragic figure. his parents died at a very young age, and some argue he never fully recovered from the illness that almost killed him. here in this picture we see him at the end of his life.

it is said that he died during a game of chess.

Nice balance of details, lightning, expression and countless other things that you've improved the last year.

If the backgrounds meant to symbolize the two halfs of his time as a leader, the light and dark times, i still think you could've added some sort lightning ont he dark side. It gets a bit to dark in my opinion, and that makes it unintressting, but thats the only mayor thing that i see right away that kind of irritates me.
Overall good work, as usual.

Haha! Iivana Julma (that's what he's called in Finnish. Don't know why the name is translated though :'D)
Such a bad-ass. It's strange how paranoid people get to rule in Russia (like Stalin for example. Or was it Lenin? Don't remember).
It's fun (and horrifying) to watch what happens in our neightbour country now when Putin is doing his things.

Anyway, about the pic. I love it as I (almost) always do when it comes to your work. The topic is something that I would not expect from a.. umm.. .. hm.. Yankee ''8D (srsly, you guys don't quite seem to follow the world)
The guy's face is absolutely fabulous and I like the look that he has.
The scene that he's in is great too - especially if you think about the fact (?) that he died in those circumstances.

really nice work man. I like it a lot, but why does like 90% of your drawings contain blood, is there something ya want to tell us Ryan?

I heard after the St Basil was built the architect lost his eyes so he couldn't make another beautiful castle after it. But that might be mere legend. Awesome work, I love the spacing and such.

there sure are alot of people insinuating americans either know nothing, or only think about america.

I swear, we are not our politicians. We are much much more than that.

Impressive. Really good painting. Although I'm not much for this whole history and royal families thing. I've always hated the subject and everything about it.

Kind of interesting king and interesting "story" though.

Oh and, sorry to hear about the forever ban on SA. But what can I say? Welcome to my world baby.

The bishop seems upset.

Somehow.

I know that. Especially young people in your contry are pretty smart.
It's just the stereotypical mindset that is quite common and very hard to avoid. In our media we only see your politicians, those crazy reality-shows (The American Inventer for example, haha) and your celebrity or other stupid people like those who sue companies because no-one told them not to put their cat in a microwave.
